Changes to TikTok’s US privacy policy introduced a new section whereby a social media app “can collect biometric identifiers and biometric information” from its users’ content.

TikTok representatives did not clarify which product developments required the addition of biometrics to the list of collected user information. However, the application will ask for consent if such data collection practices begin.

Details on biometric data collection have been provided in the added Image and Audio Information section under the heading Information We Collect Automatically in the Privacy Policy.

The first part of the new section explains that TikTok can collect information about images and audio that is in user content, “such as the identification of objects and landscapes depicted, the presence and location of facial and body features in the image, and the nature of the spoken sound, and text of words “.

As stated in the privacy policy, this part of the data collection is intended to include “special video effects, for content moderation, for demographic classification, for recommendations for content and advertising, as well as for other non-personally identifiable operations,” the document says.
