Yandex has undergone the largest cyberattack in the history of Runet
The Yandex company was subjected to a DDoS attack over the weekend, which continues to this day. The company called the attack by hackers the largest in the history of Runet writes Vedomosti.
The fact of the DDOS attack was confirmed by a high-ranking source in Yandex and the American company Cloudflare, which worked with it, to repel cyberattacks. The specialists managed to contain the attack, but with difficulty. The company is undergoing an internal audit.
“We are talking about a threat to the infrastructure on a national scale,” the source said but did not answer whether the company had filed a complaint with the FSB or the police.
An official representative of Yandex said that the hackers’ actions did not affect the operation of the services, user data did not suffer.
According to Vedomosti, in August and September, there is an increase in the number of DDoS attacks on various companies. The attacks were carried out through a new botnet masquerading as regular users. The botnet spreads through a vulnerability in firmware and already numbers up to hundreds of thousands of infected devices. This botnet sets absolute records in the number of requests per second.
Experts interviewed by the publication believe that MikroTik equipment could be used to organize a botnet.
A MicroTik spokesman said that a vulnerability was previously discovered in their own operating system RouterOs, which was fixed in 2018. However, many devices still run old software.
MicroTik is not aware of any new vulnerabilities since the one mentioned was fixed. RouterOs is scrutinized by independent auditing firms.
